Book Cover for The Gift of Charms

I love to read. I’ve been in love with reading since I was a child. So I am always looking for a good book. I love reading mysteries, romance, science fiction and historical fiction. But i’ve never really been able to get into fantasy. That might sound surprising to some, since it seems to go hand in hand with science fiction, but I just was never able to find a fantasy book I really enjoyed. Until now.

I was given The Gift of Charms by the author, Julia Suzuki. All that was asked in return is that I review the book. I immediately jumped at the chance. Sounded like a win-win situation. I’d get a new book to read and content for my blog. Ms. Suzuki would get an honest review of her book. Then I began to worry. What if I agreed to review it and I can’t even finish it. Like I said, a fantasy book has not been able to capture my attention before. I was worried I wold be stuck reading a book in which I had no interest.  I did not need to worry.

The Gift of Charms captured my attention almost immediately. First, who doesn’t like dragons? I think the success of How To Train Your Dragon has shown we all love dragons. Second, the story really is engaging. Ms. Suzuki’s use of descriptive language pulls you in right from the start. Her use of language makes it really easy to create a scene in your head as your reading the book. Plus she has created a protagonist that you can’t help but love. A little different from the rest, but still friendly and eager to try new adventures. I don’t want to give away anything about the book, because I want you to enjoy reading it as much as I did. But will tell you that by the end of the book, you’ll even grow to care about the book’s main antagonist. Ms. Suzuki really has created an engaging, fun story. Third, the book is not too long. The story is not drug out just to create a longer book. Although when the book  ends, you’ll regret it.

I’ve got some more good news about the book. It is very family friendly. This is a book the whole family can enjoy together. The Gift of Charms was written as a children’s book (although I didn’t learn this until after I finished the book), but will be enjoyed by the adults and older siblings in the family as well. I don’t have children at all and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I’ve given The Gift of Charms by Julia Suzuki five stars because the book kept my attention and left me wanting more. I cannot recommend this book more highly. It is a great read. I know I am ready for the next book in the series to become available.
