This morning I went with my husband to vote in the Florida Primary. Because we were there shortly after 7 a.m. it wasn’t very busy at all. We also only had one question on the ballot, as in my county it was a Presidential Choice Primary with no other questions on the ballot. Combined, this led to a very quick voting experience.
We did run into one little hiccup. Our precinct had a new polling place this time. From the front it was not very well lit and we initially thought it was not open. Once we drove past, we were able to see cars parked in the back, so we turned around and went in to vote.
I think we had some new poll workers this year. There have been times in the past when I felt like the poll workers were annoyed to be getting me a ballot. Not this time. They were very eager to give me a ballot. I felt like it was almost a competition to actually hand out the ballot.
Yes, I love going to vote. I am always there first thing in the morning. I don’t want to take any chances that something will happen later in the day to prevent me from voting. Plus going in the morning always guarantees lines will be shorter. In 2008, it did not mean short but still shorter than what voters found in the evening.
I’ve been in love with politics since I was a little girl. When I was 10 years old I was busy trying to convince my parents to vote for my preferred candidate (Jimmy Carter) over his opponent (Ronald Reagan). I was registered to vote months before the November 1988 elections that would be my first opportunity to vote. I think voting is very important and did not want to miss out on the opportunity.
At this point, you are probably wondering about the point of this post. I want to see more people excited to vote. We are so blessed in this country to have the right to vote. So much has been done to earn us this right, yet I think it is an opportunity about which too many people are less than excited. Yes, I know this election cycle has made getting excited even harder than normal. However, we should still be excited. Election day should be a day we all eagerly await. Come, join me in my happiness about having the right to vote.
Thank you for bearing with my post today. Until next time, go out and vote!
